Crochet and Yarn Craft Statistics: 2022 and 2024 Data
Seven citable findings from a nationally representative U.S. arts survey and a 2024 yarn consumer survey, covering participation, making habits, and how yarn shoppers discover products.

Crochet statistics are often folded into broader yarn-craft research. This page keeps the source and the scope clear: the first figure comes from a nationally representative U.S. arts survey, while the remaining figures come from a 2024 survey of more than 7,000 yarn consumers. The yarn-consumer findings describe that surveyed audience, not every crocheter or knitter in the United States.

How to read these numbers
The National Endowment for the Arts figure is the broadest measure here, but its category combines several textile crafts. The 2024 yarn survey represents people already connected to yarn brands and yarn crafts. That makes it useful for understanding an active yarn-making audience, but it should not be used to estimate the share of all Americans who crochet or knit.
The figures are most useful when quoted with their context. For example: “In a 2024 survey of more than 7,000 yarn consumers, 73% of respondents said they crochet.” Keeping the survey audience in the sentence makes the claim more accurate and more useful to readers.

This fact sheet uses two sources: the National Endowment for the Arts' 2022 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, published in October 2023, and the 2024 Yarn Consumer Survey results published May 14, 2024 by Craft Industry Alliance from research presented by Berroco at h+h Americas 2024.
